Your family includes people such as your mother, father, brothers and sisters. If people such as your grandmother, grandfather, aunts, uncles and cousins live with you, in the same house, they can also be called your family. Below are pictures of families.
Families may be large or small. Small families may contain one parent and one child, two parents and one child, one parent and two children, etc. A large family may contain two parents, five children and two grandparents or something like that.
A family tree shows the different members of a family. An example of a family tree is shown below.
A family will have older siblings and younger siblings, such as older brother or younger sister. One child may be the first born, another the second child, another the third child, etc. You may have the oldest child, middle child or youngest child. In Jamaica, we call the youngest child ‘wash belly’. Below are pictures of siblings.
You should try to find out information about your family members such as their full names, ages, birthdays, occupation (type of work), where they work, their phone number, etc.
Families live together in the same house or apartment.
Families celebrate certain days such as: birthdays, Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day and Valentines’ Day. Valentines’ Day is for lovers.

Nutrients are in all foods that we eat. Nutrients are needed by the body to provide us with energy and to let the various organs of the body function properly.
There are six types of nutrients:
(1) Water – Water has many uses to the body. Water is needed to keep the body’s different organs and parts hydrated, to carry nutrients around the body in the blood, etc., to regulate the body’s temperature, to help with the removal of waste products with urine, etc. and to help with the digestion of food. Try to drink about six eight-ounce cups of water each day.
(2) Carbohydrate – Carbohydrate provides the human body with heat and energy. Examples of foods which provide much carbohydrate are bread, flour, rice, breadfruit, yam, cake, pudding, biscuit/cookie, doughnut and sugar.
(3) Protein – Protein is needed to help the body to grow and to maintain and repair worn out and damaged tissues in the body. Meat based foods are good sources of protein. They include fish (canned and natural, poultry or chicken and red and white meats such as liver, kidney, mutton, beef and sausage.
(4) Vitamins – There are different types of vitamins. Examples are vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin B2, vitamin C, vitamin K and vitamin D. Vitamin A helps to give you good eye-sight, vitamin C helps to fight diseases, vitamin K helps to give healthy brain and clots blood and the B vitamins help with many things in the body such as nerve health, skin health, formation of red blood cells and to help convert carbohydrate to energy. Generally, all foods contain much of the various vitamins. Examples of vitamin-rich foods include meats, vegetables, fruits, milk, ice cream, egg and cereal – all foods really.
(5) Minerals – Minerals have various uses such as helping with bone formation and maintenance, nerve function, heart health, hormone production, oxygen transportation, tissue formation, wound healing and bodily fluid balance. Examples of foods rich in minerals are milk, cheese, beans, peas, meats, vegetables, fruits, starch such as green bananas, green leafy vegetables, ripe bananas, peanuts, whole grains – all foods basically.
(6) Fat – Fat is important to the body as well, but in small amounts. Fat provides the body with heat and energy, as well as help the organs to function properly. Excess fat in the body is stored under the skin helps to keep the body warm. Too much fat causes a person to become too fat or obese. Foods high in fat include animal skin, certain meats such as kidney and pigs tail, oil, butter, avocado pear, ackee and mayonnaise.
A balanced diet contains all the various nutrients in the right proportions. It’s not hard to have a balanced diet. Just try to eat some of all foods (as long as the food is not poison). To get the foods in the right proportion, don’t eat too much or too little at one time. Eat just enough to fill your stomach.
